Orchids Native to Michigan
Just arrived are Orchid varieties that are native to Michigan. Native plants are becoming more popular and as we add more native varieties to our selection we'll keep you informed of our new finds. These orchids are hardy (-30 to -40 below) and form clumps of long leaf foliage. Thick, green flower stalks display small flowers. They take part sun to shade and are ideal for creating contrast in perennial gardens.
- Ladies Tresses Orchid – White flowers with a light scent. Grow 2-3' tall and 2' wide.
- Striata Orchid – Pink flowers without scent. Grow 12" tall and 12" wide.
- Kuchibeni Orchid – Light purple flowers with dark purple lip. Grow 12" tall and 12" wide.
Crocosmia, Lucifer Lily – Bright Eyes is a new variety of Crocosmia that only grows 20" tall versus the normal 40" height. It takes full sun and the flowers are bright orange that turn to red.
Winter Jasmine – A very long flowering plant that provides yellow flowers from early to late fall and then repeats flowering in the spring. It can grow up trellises or cascade over rock walls. It grows 3' tall and 6' wide and needs full sun.
Though not a perennial, customers have been trying the new Magnimoist Soil-Hydrating Fiber disks. The disks come in various widths to fit all pot sizes. The disk is placed below the potting soil, and then deflects water back to the plant during watering. Once the soil is fully saturated, the fibers become porous, releasing the excess water.
