Fall Decorating
Autumn's Colors and Textures Add Fun and Charm
I planted the containers on my deck this spring and they were wonderful all summer. However, by the end of last week, they were looking tired and I was tired of them. I was excited to replace them with some new bright colors and interesting foliage that looked like fall. I let my children help with picking out some items too, and now we each have our own patio pot on the deck. When the pumpkins come in, we'll each decorate a pumpkin and add it to our own pot to complete our theme. It helps to make the transition to fall more enjoyable.
Pansies and mums are foundational items for fall planting. In addition, we have decorative cabbages and kales, snapdragons, stock, millet and plenty of other annuals that take the cold. Pumpkins, miniature straw bales, gourds, dried seed pods and more can be added to and around your container gardens to create an autumn setting.
Some ideas for fall decorating include:
•Adding plastic apples and/or silk flowers (due to squirrels) to an arrangement of gourds, pumpkins and mums on their front porch.
•Making grapevine swags and wreaths with leaves and adding mum blossoms in small water picks to keep the flowers fresh.
•Replacing pots on plant stands with colorful gourds and squash.
•Placing small ears of dried corn, small pumpkins and unshelled nuts in baskets to serve as centerpieces or mantel decorations.
•Simply placing pumpkins and corn stalks on the front porch with some mums creates a charming setting.
•Create your own scarecrow with old clothing, some twine and sticks and straw.
We should have all our fall and Halloween décor in the store by mid-September. I hope you enjoy decorating for fall as much as I do.
