Indoor and outdoor swags, wreaths and boughs plus outdoor urns are decorating accents that help to establish a holiday mood. In reviewing holiday decorating trends we've seen a variety of approaches to creating holiday themes for the home.

Some of the trends include:

-Incorporating "green" thinking into your decorating and we don't mean just the color green. Using natural items such as boxwood, rose hips, seed pods, curly willow, winterberry, pine cones and various evergreens in your holiday decorating. Not only is the scent from the greenery soothing, the natural combinations are also appealing to the eye.

-In addition when you are ready to toss the greenery, set them outside near a bird feeder to provide shelter for birds as they feed or if you have used winterberry in your arrangements, set the stems in a pail filled with sand for the birds to finish off. Discarded greenery also makes great mulch if you have shrubs or other perennials that might need an extra layer of winter protection.

-Christmas trees can be recycled. After the holidays set your tree outside near a bird feeder. You'll be amazed at how many birds will seek shelter in the tree while they flint back and forth to your feeder.

-Your choice of colors can be incorporated throughout your home with painted poinsettias, ribbons, candles, painted seed pods and glass, etc. Greenery is the great anchor for holiday decorating, whatever theme or color you are developing this year, greenery goes well with any and all decorating.

-Groupings. Groupings can be formal, informal, symmetrical, asymmetrical and everything in between. Many people find groupings of items throughout the home and outside enables them to tie vintage holiday decorations with new and is a way to mix and match textures, sizes and colors to create a festive look.
