New Annuals for 2009
Offer Color, Variety and Hardiness
There are several exciting new plants available for spring 2009. I'm going to write about just a few that are particularly appealing to me.
Drakensburg Daisy™:
This is no ordinary gerbera daisy. Drakensburg Daisies™ are extremely tough, disease resistant and vigorous. They have loads of 2.5" flowers high above 24" plants. This variety works well in landscape plantings or combination pots. They also make great cut flowers. If you like the look of regular gerbera daisies but want the plant to perform all summer, Drakensburg Daisy™ will be a terrific addition!
SunPatiens™:
SunPatiens are sensational garden performing plants. They work in the sun or the shade and thrive where other impatiens wither and cringe. I've seen them in two landscape trials this past summer and was impressed with how tough they really are. They spread out in the garden so give them lots of space. For everyone who forgets to fertilize their gardens, this is a great plant because it does not require fertilization.
Coleus Henna:
The foliage color on the Henna Coleus is truly outstanding; I know it really caught my eye at the trials where I saw it. The foliage is serrated and a unique chartreuse to copper color complemented by dark burgundy undersides. It can perform well in the full sun or part shade, gets to be 22-28" tall and 14 to 16" wide. It is simply beautiful.
Zahara Yellow Zinnia:
We expect this variety to be very popular. It is similar to the Profussion series of zinnias, which means they will be hardy. They are consistent performers throughout the summer and can tolerate extreme heat. They are approximately 12-18" tall with a 12-18" spread.
Petunia Picobella:
This is a cute new series that really impressed me. I'm not normally a petunia fan because petunias tend to look ragged by early August. (Wave Petunias not included). The Picobella series is different because it stays dwarf / mounded with beautiful, small flowers. This makes them perfect for adding color to a border along a driveway or at the front of a bed.
