Tropical Plants

The foliage of many tropical plants adds interest to our gardens and patio pots in addition to great color.

Add Variety and Dimension to Gardens

There is something really unique and beautiful about the look of tropicals in a garden. Florida folks are used to seeing these plants all the time. Those of us from Michigan are only just learning about the potentials.

My grandfather, Chris Wenke, loved cannas. We had beautiful cannas in the store because he was passionate about quality bulbs and was a perfectionist grower. He passed away several years ago and now we have to rely on outside sources for this majestic plant. We have a variety called Australia right now with beautiful bronze foliage that will soon develop large red flowers. Canna look great in large combo pots by the front entrance or in the ground in a sunny location. With care in the fall, you can bring the bulb inside for the winter and plant it again in the spring to enjoy over and over again.

Ensete looks a lot like a banana and is new for us at Wenke Greenhouses. It can get quite large in the landscape and will perform best in a warm, part-sun environment with above average moisture. There are no flowers on this plant but the foliage is outstanding.

Mandevilla have been a long-time favorite because of their beautiful pink blooms and the way they climb up a trellis. Enjoy the beauty all summer with one of these in a large container on your deck or by a pool.
