Houseplants
Not Just for Decoration Anymore
Contributed by C.J. Drenth, Assistant Retail Manager
Back in the '70's houseplants were a craze. Everyone had a Philodendron or two in a beaded macramé plant hanger. Probably hanging alongside that beaded doorway divider. Houseplants may have lost their "pet rock" popularity, but in today's hectic world, they provide much more than something beautiful to look at. (If you don't know what a "pet rock" is, you probably didn't live through the 1970's.)
Our homes are better insulated today. This means that the air inside in the summertime or wintertime stays inside; along with the hazards - dust, stale air, and of course, carbon dioxide. Houseplants take in that carbon dioxide and give us oxygen in return. So, it's like an air filtration system for your house; but one at a much lower cost than a mechanical system. So in addition to being beneficial in improving the look of your home, they actually improve your environment in a way you can't even see!
We currently have beautiful houseplants in stock; a wide variety to choose from. Some are extremely low maintenance, some a little fussier. Some are so fancy; they would make a great birthday or anniversary gift; or something that would last a lot longer than cut flowers for a friend in the hospital.
Here are a just a few of the unique plants we now have in stock
Coffee Plant. Yes, it's a coffee plant, It will take 2-3 years before yielding beans, but it will! Likes a little humidity and indirect lighting. This plant will grow rapidly, and should be repotted every year.
Ponytail Palm. The name is the description. This palm has an enormous root and shoots out green "hairs" in every direction. This plant grows slowly, but is easy to care for, as it only needs water once every 1-2 weeks.
Croton. Name is odd, but the plant is not. Brightly colored yellow, orange and red foliage only gets brighter when exposed to direct sunlight.
Succulents. We still have a wonderful selection of succulents – cacti, aloes, and some odd looking plants you might never have seen before! Select one individually, or one of our pre-planted arrangements featuring 2 to 6 in each pot. Most succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, which may be ideal for a new or forgetful indoor gardener!
Many annual flowers are lovely as indoor houseplants. Shamrocks, Begonias and Cyclamen, just to name a few.
