Plants Add Happiness
An Interview with Pam Wright
Pam is an exploratory gardener. Trying new plants and vegetable varieties are part of the learning and fun of gardening for her. "A large part of the joy of gardening for me is experimenting," explains Pam.
"In any given year, I will try 10-12 new varieties of plants and vegetables. Not only do I learn what grows best in my gardens, but I also discover beauty and bounty that surprises me," Pam states. Case in point is a new zucchini squash variety she planted called "Eight Ball."
It is a bush versus spreading squash variety and it produced very well and didn't take over her garden. Other new plants she tried this year included; cherry grape tomatoes, herbs, Cannas, root vegetables and pole beans. Pam's confidence to try new things was partly encouraged by the Quick Classes offered at the store.
"The classes were informative and it was great to hear the successes and challenges other gardeners had in growing plants. It's always nice to know I wasn't alone in the "Oops" department," laughs Pam.
Pam's interest in gardening began when she was 8/9 years old and had a few flowers growing in her parent's garden. She continued growing plants and vegetables when married and now her husband, Aaron, just loves the quality and freshness of homegrown tomatoes. "We made a few mistakes along the way like growing 30 tomato plants one year………however we made lots of sauce that year," Pam says with a smile.
Her greatest discoveries for making her gardens flourish are rain barrels and her custom designed soaker hose. She has two, 55 gallon rain barrels near her gardens and doesn't have to haul hoses or carry water. She mulches and weeds regularly.
"I find weeding is a quiet time for me. I'm alone in the garden, working the earth and loving the exercise and being engaged with growing. I can address my concerns of the day while gardening and work through them or I can just be," says Pam.
