The Poinsettia - A Brief History
Native to Central America, the Poinsettias was named Taxo del Alarcon. The ancient Aztecs used extracted dye from the plants to use for dying textiles and use in cosmetics. The milky sap from the plant which we now call latex, was utilized as a fever reducer.
The first US Ambassador to Mexico was Joel Roberts Poinsett. His father was a physician, he also attended medical school, and loved botany. In later years, he helped found the Smithsonian Institution. In 1828, he brought some to his home in Greenville, South Carolina, where he began propagation of the beautiful flowers.
Now, Congress has designated December 12 as National Poinsettia Day, commemorating the date that Joel Roberts Poinsett passed away.
