Fall Color at Wenke Greenhouses

So everyone was getting ready for the block party.  The tables were being brought out and the tent was being set up.  What do you think I was doing?  You're right - I was planting the Cool Wave Pansies in my front yard only a few feet away from where the block party was to be in the spot where I had just divided the peonies.  I just couldn't wait.  After the hot summer months and activities, I was excited to get out there and dig!  Yes, I did help when I was needed to hold up a corner of the tent.  I think my neighbors enjoy seeing all the beautiful color too so it worked out well for everyone!  I'm also enjoying my fresh lettuce from my deck.  Hopefully you can see the picture of me harvesting the leaves from the planter on my deck.  I mixed the lettuce in with the colorful annuals for a delightful combination.

This Thursday, September 27th from 4-8 is a special, fun event at Vandenberg Furniture just north of Schoolcraft that Wenke Greenhouses is participating in.  Buy Local has organized severa area businesses to participate in this free open house with appetizers, drinks, decorating ideas and more.

We also have a Quick Class on Thursday the 27th from 6-7 on winterizing your garden / bringing plants inside.

Cool Wave

Cool Wave Pany is one of my favorite new plants.  I enjoy planting pansies in the fall because they make me smile today and give me something to really look forward to next spring.  Winter can be a long season in Michigan!  Cool Wave Pansies spread twice as far, twice as fast and are the best for over-wintering.  These plants are outstanding!

Tomato Tasting Results

On August 30th, we had our second annual tomato tasting event.  Carpenter Farms did a great job growing so many different varieties and then bringing them for us to taste and compare.  We enjoyed having The Cheese Lady, Mackenzie's Bakery and Ellen Russell participate too.  One thing I learned for sure was not to judge a tomato based only on the shape!  One of the best tasting varieties had the ugliest shape.

Linda Whitlock Fall Advice

We were fortunate enough to have Linda Whitlock join us the other day to lead a Quick Class.  She is a wealth of knowledge about plants and how to best take care of them in this area.  Linda works with the MSU Extension Service in Consumer Horticulture.  I took a lot of notes about everything from the lack of water and how it will effect the trees to why fall is a great time for planting and her suggestions.  It's too bad the class was only an hour!
