This Saturday, October 5th, is a special day at Wenke Greenhouses. On the face of it, Saturday will be a lot of fun because of the bounce-house, pumpkin painting, petting zoo and other fun family activties that will be going on from 11-3. The dunk-tank is also a favorite for many - especially since Lorence Wenke will be the target! But in addition to the fun, there's another reason Saturday will be a special day.
On Saturday, half of the perennial sales and half of the ticket sales will go toward a scholarship fund started in the memory Lisa Herrera who was the daughter of Cheryl Herrera. If you've shopped at Wenke Greenhouses, it's likely that you have met Cheryl. She's been an important part of our team for several years and I'm glad we are able to help support this cause. (Details in the article below).
We hope you can join us on Saturday for the fun and to help us raise money for the Lisa Herrera Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Fall is a great time for planting perennials!
Where the Earth Laughs in Flowers!
Wenke Fall Festival and Fundraiser for Lisa Herrera Memorial Scholarship Fund
October 5, 2013 11am-3pm
Come join us for some family fun while also supporting a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. Tragedy has struck our team member, Cheryl Herrera. In a very violent act of domestic violence, her daughter, Lisa and her grandson, Max were taken from her and her family in July. We invite our community to come support her wish to create a scholarship fund that will be awarded to a WMU Speech Pathology student entering the Masters Program. 50% of all tickets sales and 50% of perennial and shrub sales with be donated to the fund. We will have family friendly activities including bounce house, petting zoo, face painting, pumpkin decorating, games and prizes for the kids. You can even test your skill at our dunk tank featuring our very own "Lorence Wenke." Tickets will be available for purchase for the games and refreshments.
Come have some fun while raising money for a good cause! Plant a perennial or shrub in Lisa's honor!

For the perfect late-season bloomer, Mums the word!
Mums are easy to grow, provide color up to frost and add pizzazz while we transition into winter.
This time of year my garden starts to look pretty sad. One of the things that keep me smiling is the mums I have scattered around my yard. I love using them as decorative elements on my porch and deck. I have a grouping of three large mums in pots by the front door mixed with some pumpkins and gourds for major impact and then some medium size pots spread across the front of my home for dashes of color. I even have a few scattered around the kitchen to bring the fall color palette indoors. It’s best to purchase them when they are in the budding stage or just starting to show color – You will be able to enjoy a maximized bloom time.
It is important to note that mums must be planted in the ground if you would like them to come back year after year. They need to establish a good root system to help them make it through the harsh winter.
Every now and then, we would like to put one of our team members in the spotlight so you can get to know us a little better. Since our upcoming fundraiser involves her, we thought we would start with Cheryl Herrera. Cheryl is our Customer Service Manager here at our retail location. Her job is to make sure your experience here at Wenke's is a great one! I am sure many of you will recognize her from your visits to the store.
