With the cold weather descending, my garden is looking a little forlorn. The only thing catching my eye right now are some graceful grasses and a few gorgeous pink cabbages that I planted in my perennial garden this fall. This was my first venture in planting ornamental cabbage and kale. I didn't have much room in my perennial gardens, but I did manage to squeeze in a few. In addition, I also planted a galvanized tub full of cabbage, kale, mini ornamental peppers and mums to put in the front of the house. It was spectacular! This past weekend, I replanted that container with some cut greens for winter and was surprised to find the cabbages were still going strong. The best thing about ornamental cabbage is that the color deepens as the weather gets colder. I am definitely going to make room for more cabbage next fall to bring more dramatic color in my perennial garden all the way into winter.
Recently, one of our customers asked if poinsettias are poisonous. I wanted to share this because it is common around Christmas time for people to warn one another about the alleged toxicity of poinsettias. The great news is they’re beautiful, they're safe and they shout Christmas! You can read more in the article below.
I have begun to decorate our home using a combination of lights, live plants and cut greens. They are perfect for bringing my home to life in a season when the garden is closing down. Despite their toxic reputation, poinsettias are not poisonous!
No plant is more closely associated with Christmas than the poinsettia. It is celebrated for its beauty but also feared for its toxicity. For years, poinsettias have had the bad reputation of being poisonous. However, poinsettias have undergone extensive testing and there is no evidence that they are toxic or unsafe to have in the house.
Christmas Plants that add warmth and vibrance to your home
Many houseplants that bloom in December have become staples of holiday decorating, including Christmas cactus, cyclamen, kalanchoe, paper whites, phalaenopsis orchids, amaryllis, rosemary and, of course, poinsettias. Dwarf Alberta spruce and Norfolk pine make ideal miniature Christmas trees. These are ideal for placing around the house or in a guest room to welcome holiday visitors.
Decorating with Cut Greens
Cut greens are perfect for bringing any home to life in a season when the garden is closing down. Cold weather or not, we still use our entryways, front doors and driveways and it is important to keep these places welcoming, not just for others but for our own sense of wellbeing.
