Bee Happy ☼

Can you believe we are just a little more than half way through 2014?  We are already 198 days into the year. Where did the days go? It seems like just yesterday we were dealing with that brutally cold and snowy winter.  Brrr...I still shiver just thinking about it!

Like any good milestone, midyear is a great time to take a chance to step back and evaluate your year so far with your goals and objectives and to take action to get back on track if necessary.  Since I shared my gardening resolutions with you in January, I thought you might be interested to hear how they are going.

  1. Make watering the garden easier while trying to conserve water. This has been a great success.  Along with installing 2 rain barrels,  we have also had great success with gutter gardening in 5 gallon buckets.  Our garden is flourishing and we will have a great harvest this year.  Read more about how we did it here.

  2. Enjoy more homegrown food.  Oh yes! We are enjoying our homegrown food. Bumper crop of cucumbers and green peppers; beans are just ready to pick (dinner tonight!);  looking forward to eating my first homegrown tomato of the season soon; only one zucchini so far but we will be overwhelmed with them soon and it looks like we are going to have a bumper crop of sweet corn as well! YUM! Nothing more satisfying than eating fruit and veggies from your own garden.

  3. Take care of my garden tools.  I did admit, I am pretty lazy about taking care of my gardening tools.  If I am being honest - not much has changed!

  4. Plant more native plants. I have added a few natives to my garden but this is an area that still needs more work.

I hope you find a midyear check as helpful as I did! I realize I still have a few things to work on. Now let's move on and make the second half of the year really count!

I have included some information below about an event that is very near and dear to the heart for all of us at Wenke Greenhouses.   Last July, Cheryl Herrera, our customer service manager, tragically lost her daughter, Lisa, and her grandson, Maxwell,  due to a deliberate act of domestic violence.  To help ease the void this tragedy has created, she and her family have been working to raise money for a scholarship fund created in Lisa and Max's name and memory.  To raise funds, they have planned a golf outing including a silent auction and meal on July 20th, 2014.  If you are interested, I have included the information below.

Are you planning a BBQ with friends and want to quickly decorate your patio?  Maybe your patio pots or hanging baskets are in need of a little pick-me-up?  Maybe you now have the time to make that area next to the deck a little more appealing.  Whatever the reason, now is a great time to stop in at Wenke Greenhouses to find the plants to make it happen. We just received a fresh supply of hanging baskets that are now 30% off.  Perennials, trees and shrubs are also 30% off right now.  We're open all summer and look forward to having you stop by.  Open Monday - Saturday 9 - 6.

Where the Earth Laughs in Flowers

Gutter Gardening using 5 gallon buckets

I was looking for something to make my life easier and to help my plants. This self-watering system allows my plants to wick up water to its roots from a reservoir of water at the bottom. No overwatering. No underwatering. My plant drink when thirsty.
