Celebrate Autumn

I get so much enjoyment out of watching the birds in my backyard all year round but many don't realize that the coldest months can be some of the hottest for backyard bird action. The key is to know which birds winter in the area and to prepare your yard to meet their needs. By providing the food, water and shelter these birds need, I am looking forward to some great backyard birding as the temperature drops - giving me something to look forward to this winter!

A frustrating part of birding for me, is learning bird songs. In my quest to learn more, I found an online resource called All About Bird Song from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It is a great website that challenges you to combine your senses to remember and appreciate the voices of over 30 favorite birds. It also reveals what bird songs are all about: the purpose, the mechanics, and just how amazing an accomplishment  bird songs really are.  Did you know that many birds have to learn to sing—just like a child learning to speak? That there are local dialects? Or that some birds can sing two notes at once?  So check it out and find out - how many bird songs do you know?

Don’t forget to plant some pansies this month. Depending on the weather, these little beauties could continue to bloom in your garden into early December. When temperatures go below freezing, pansies will stop growing and blooming but will come back in full force in early spring and bloom their hearts out until hot weather stifles them in the summer. And if you plant now, you won't have to freeze your fingers planting in the early spring. Pansy flats are now Buy One Get One Free. Regular price is $13.99/flat. October is also a great month to plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. All remaining bulbs are Buy One Get One Free. Nothing is better than to see early spring flowers after a long, hard winter.

Be sure to stop in and check out our fresh selection of locally grown mums - many different sizes still available- now Buy One Get One Free.  You can still get wonderful fall decorations from us including straw bales, corn shocks, ornamental corn, gourds and pumpkins.

Fall is a prime time to plant and a prime time to save money as well.  All remaining perennials are 50% off.  Remember, the secret to a great landscape next spring is to plant now and save in the process. There is still time!
