September's Welcome!

So when the shadows lengthen

into an evening sun...
Well, first there's summer, then I'll let you in,

September, when it comes.

-Rosanne Cash

Hard to tell with the excessive heat today, but nature is getting ready to say goodbye to summer with shorter days and hints of red in the maple trees already. Instead of mourning summer, it’s time to get ready for a party! Nature’s farewell party to summer! Thankfully, Mother Nature provides us with plenty of time to enjoy all the wonderful gifts autumn has to offer with spectacular colors, bountiful harvests and enjoyable weather. Are you ready to party? Let’s get started!

We’ve got the spectacular colors of fall available in our store right now! We have pansies, ornamental cabbage and kale as well as cool loving annuals perfect for fall decorating. Fall is also a great time for planting.  In many ways, it's an even better time to plant than in the spring. So take advantage of the cooler temperatures along with the 30% off savings on all perennials & shrubs going on now at Wenke Greenhouses. And of course, mums are a favorite for fall decorating and the ones in the parking lot are still on sale 10 for $20.  It's a great deal and quick way to show your fall colors or to spruce up for guests.

There are even some vegetables that actually do better in the fall. The fall frosts improve the flavor of these vegetables and can even make them sweeter. These vegetables include beets, Brussels sprouts, kale, carrots and parsnips. Cool weather veggies are easy to grow even for the novice gardener making fall a great time to start. Or how about a lettuce bowl for fresh salad whenever the mood strikes? We have everything you need to get started. Stop in and see us today!

So are your homegrown tomatoes or peppers still plentiful? If so, you may want to see how they compare to others? Or maybe you didn't grow any this year but are trying to decide which varieties to grow for next season. On Saturday, September 12th, Kalamazoo in Bloom and MSU Master Gardeners are hosting a Fall Garden Affair featuring a tomato and pepper taste-off as well as a farmer's market.  This is a free event that runs from 9:30 am until noon at the former Nazareth complex at 3299 Gull Rd. This is a great opportunity to try some different tomato and pepper varieties while voting for your favorites. There will even be some food demonstrations! Yum! The farmer's market can be a great opportunity to persuade your children to eat more vegetables, so have them pick out some beans or kale or beets or something that they’ve never tried before.

It’s just about time to start planting spring blooming bulbs! Bloom Pads have arrived making bulb planting so easy and are priced at $9.99 each or 2 for $15. Bloom pads are perfect for containers, border gardens or your garden. They are ready to plant now, so stop by soon to take advantage of the fresh selection!

Fall hours are Mon-Sat from 9-6 but we will be closed on Labor Day.

Hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Mums the word around here right now!

No doubt about it! Mums are the divas of the autumn garden. Mums can quickly and easily add beautiful fall colors to your home. Because of their tight, mounding habit and stunning bloom colors, garden mums are perfect for mass plantings. To get the maximum effect, stick to only one or two colors. You might also choose to arrange a gradual transition of related colors. It is best to look around your yard to see what colors would best complement the existing landscape and decor.
