"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."

“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”  ― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Even in October, the gardening season isn’t over! While I am sad to say good bye to many of my summer flowers, these crisp fall days more than make up for it. Beautiful fall days makes for perfect gardening weather allowing you to clean up the garden before winter while reducing your work load the following spring. And if you are anything like me, cooler days mean catching up on some of those projects you wanted to do during the heat of the summer but just couldn’t summon the energy. I am finding, as I get older, that I look forward to the cooler days more than I used to!

While there are many things that need to be done in the garden right now before winter arrives, the most important is to water, water, and water some more! Sometimes I feel like a broken record but this is SO important! Maintaining moisture gives trees, shrubs, roses and perennials a fighting chance as they enter winter in the best possible condition. So keep your garden well-watered until the first freeze.

October is a great time for planting and filling in those bare spots. In many ways, it's an even better time to plant than in the spring. All remaining perennials, trees and shrubs (including roses) at Wenke Greenhouses are now 50% off. Stop in today for best selection and let us help you choose the right plants for your needs.

Now is a wonderful time to update your container gardens or start a new one using plants that prefer the cooler temperatures. Celebrate the beauty of autumn by filling your fall container garden with a variety of plants such as mums, pansies, grasses, or even colorful kale and cabbage. Displaying pumpkins, gourds, dried colorful corn or corn stalks next to your fall container will also add an extra splash of seasonal color. Wenke's has everything you need to create that amazing fall display!

No time to make your own fall container garden? Wenke Greenhouses can customize one just for you or choose from our large selection of pre-potted container gardens ready-made for you to take home today!

Wenke’s has great pricing on colorful mums! Medium mums 3 for $8, large mums 3 for $12 and Extra Large only 3 for $15. And while mums are a favorite for fall, providing rich tones of bronze, red, yellow and lavender, consider adding textural contrast with ornamental cabbage and kale. Or liven things up with the vivid color palate of pansies. We've got everything you need to celebrate this amazing fall season.

It’s not too late to join us tonight at 6pm and learn more about Worm Composting. This is a great time to learn how easy it is to create your own nutrient rich garden soil. Some of you may think you don’t have space to compost but a worm bin will fit discreetly into a closet, garage, or pantry, making composting quick and convenient, especially for small-space gardeners and apartment-dwellers. Flowerfield Enterprises will be on hand to teach us how to set up and maintain a worm composting system. No need to register at this point – you can just show up at the retail store. Come check it out!
