The End of the Fall Season

I finally broke down and turned on the furnace last night. Just in time for this miserable cold day mixed with snow flurries! I know, it’s silly to have gone this long without turning it on but it’s kind of our "thing" now. It all started one fall about 10 years ago when we made it all the way to November 1st without turning on the furnace. Ever since then, we shiver our way through October eagerly waiting for the calendar to flip to November.  Actually, my sons are the ones who shiver since my husband and I actually enjoy it a little on the cool side, especially for sleeping. But, on the plus side, it looks like it won’t be on for long since Keith is forecasting 70 degree weather all next week.  Yippee!

We officially close the doors for the 2015 season tomorrow, Oct 30, 2015. We still have some mums and pansies available – all 50% off. There is still time to plant pansies for some early spring color. Depending on the weather, these little beauties could continue to bloom in your garden into early December. When temperatures go below freezing, pansies will stop growing and blooming but will come back in full force in early spring and bloom their hearts out until hot weather stifles them in the summer. And if you plant now, you won't have to freeze your fingers planting in the early spring. Stop in and see us. We will be open from 9-6 tomorrow.

For those interested in becoming Master Gardeners, registration is now open for the next Master Gardener class in southwestern Michigan.  Classes will begin on January 21, 2016 and meet weekly from 5:30 to 9:30 pm through April 28 in the Kalamazoo RESA building located at 1819 E. Milham Avenue in Portage.  The cost for the class is $300 which includes the class manual.  You may register online at http://msue.anr.msu.edu/events/master_gardener_program_portage if you are interested.

Gift certificates will still be available even though the retail store will be closed.  To order, please call our wholesale office at 269-349-7882. Gift Certificates are available in any denomination and never expire making them a great gift for the homeowner or gardener on your Christmas list. We can accept credit cards over the phone or checks mailed in advance, or stop by our wholesale office with cash to pick one up (2525 North 30th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49048).

Thank you for a terrific spring, summer and fall season and we look forward to seeing you again in Spring 2016.

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!
