Ready, Set...GROW!

What a wonderful time of year! Yes, I know it's a little hot but weren't we just complaining it was too cold? My gardens look so amazing right now. I wish I had more time to enjoy them! The grass is so green: lilacs smell AMAZING; my creeping phlox are still blooming; irises are in full bloom; aliums and peonies buds are ready to burst open; my rhododendrons opened with an explosion of blooms this week.... Life is good. Oh, and let's not forget the viburnums that are in bloom right now. They are truly magnificent right now!

I get most excited about some of the more short lived perennials, because I will only be able to enjoy them for a few short weeks. Right now, my irises are blooming one by one, showing off each amazing form and color. And I can't wait for the aliums and peonies! I love my garden. It is therapy for me and I love being so close to nature when I am digging in the dirt!

We have some great deals going on right now just in time for summer planting:

  • Clematis is our featured perennial and is 25% off through June 8th. If you’ve ever seen a clematis in full bloom, you know this perennial can be a real showstopper! Clematis are revered as the queen of the climbers with varieties for every season and color scheme. Train them to climb over a trellis or pergola, through a tree or even use as a groundcover.  Quick and easy growing vine with masses of blooms. We just received a fresh shipment yesterday. Hurry in for best selection!

Free Events and Classes:

  • SWMI Iris Society Competition and Show - Saturday, June 4, 2016. Join us here at the store and check out the beautiful blossoms entered in the iris competition. The public is invited to take part in this contest. If you are interested in competing, please bring your entries between 8 and 10am.  If you've got questions this is a great opportunity to find out the best way to grow irises.

And don't forget to stop in to get free liquid fertilizer - just bring your own container.  Fertilizer is the secret to beautiful flowers all summer long. We also encourage you to drop off the plastic pots and trays for recycling.  The recycle bins are in the NE corner of the parking lot and are available 24 hours a day.

We have really worked hard to create an oasis to delight and inspire so be sure to stop in and see us if you haven't already. Thankfully, there is no construction going on around us this year to keep you away! Looking forward to seeing you this weekend. We'll be open 8am-8pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on both Sunday and Monday (Memorial Day).

All the staff at Wenke Greenhouses would like to express our thanks all those who sacrificed their lives defending our rights and extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the many military veterans still living, and anyone actively serving in the Armed Forces. Thank you!

Peonies make me happy!

Peonies are an old fashioned favorite perennial!  They are loved for their heavily-scented beautiful, extra large blooms and survive quite well in our Michigan gardens. Peonies come in 4 flower forms – Single, Semi-double, Double and Japanese (Anemone). The flowers will become fuller as the plant matures. Peonies make an excellent cut flower. Even after flowering is done the plant provides size and texture to the perennial garden and they are a deer resistant.
