I hope you're enjoying the last month of summer. For me, August is a time when we visit garden trials, trade shows and plan for next year. How the flowers and vegetables we sell perform is really important to us. Please feel free to write an email telling me what worked and what didn't work in your garden this year. Your comments are very helpful when we make variety selections for next year. We're also gathering pictures to use in the store to inspire other people on how plants will look in the garden. Pictures are welcomed!
This Saturday, August 13th from 9:30-10:30, the MSU Extension service is hosting a class on Construction and Use of Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening. The event is free and will be held at the Master Gardener Vegetable Garden off Sprinkle Road just south of Kilgore. (located between Humphrey Products and Kendall Electric.) Parking is at Humphrey.
Save the date for a Fall Event at Wenke Greenhouses September 24 from 10-1. Details are still being worked out but we plan to celebrate National Honeybee Day and other pollinators, perennial exchange and more. We'll have opportunties to learn about bees, pollinators, honey and more. This should be fun for the whole family.
Perennials continue to be 25% off and you can print a coupon from the website for an additional $5 off. Value perennials are also available for $1-$5 each. These perennials just need a little love and attention to be beautiful next year. The end of summer is a great time to get terrific perennials at great prices.
Garden mums and other fall plants have arrived and/or will be arriving soon. Use your reward points and enjoy!

Echinacea - A Must-Have Perennial!
Echinacea - also known as coneflower - is a terrific perennial for Michigan flower beds. Beautiful, butterfly attracting, deer resistant flowers bloom most of the summer in sunny locations. New colors and new varieties make this plant one of the best choices.
A seed is not just a seed. Was I ever amazed after taking a tour of the Ball Seed Technology Lab in West Chicago, IL. The hours of work that it takes and the science behind what's needed is far beyond what I knew about.
